Hot tub sizes
Most backyard hot tubs are about 7 × 7 ft and hold 300 to 400 gallons. Smaller 2-person tubs hold about 150 to 220 gallons, and large 8-person tubs often reach about 600 gallons.
Typical sizes by seats
| Seats | Water | Typical footprint |
|---|---|---|
| 2 person | 150 to 220 gal | About 5 to 6 ft square |
| 4 person | About 300 gal | About 6.5 ft square |
| 6 person | 300 to 500 gal | About 7 to 7.5 ft square |
| 8 person | 600 gal or more | About 8 to 9 ft across |
These are approximate: sources differ, and seat counts are not a measure of size. Always go by the maker's spec sheet.

Planning the space
- Weight: water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon, so a 400-gallon tub holds over 3,300 lb of water before people. Check your deck with a structural pro.
- Access: leave room to open the cover and reach the service panel.
- Delivery: measure gates and turns before you buy.
Chlorine in a hot tub
The CDC recommends at least 3 ppm of chlorine in hot tubs, and pH 7.0 to 7.8. It advises against using cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine products in them.
