Pool volume calculator

Enter your measurements in feet to get gallons and liters. Every chemical dose depends on this number, so it is worth measuring properly.

Measure to the water line, not the top of the wall. Average depth is (shallow + deep) ÷ 2.

The formulas

ShapeGallons =
RectangleL × W × avg depth × 7.48
RoundDiameter² × avg depth × 5.87
OvalL × W × avg depth × 5.87
Kidney0.45 × (W1 + W2) × L × avg depth × 7.48

One cubic foot holds 7.48 US gallons. The 5.87 factor is 7.48 × π ÷ 4, the circle's share of its bounding square. Many pool shops round these to 7.5 and 5.9, which is why published charts differ slightly.

Measuring a sloped pool

Measure depth at the shallow and deep ends, to the water line, and average them. A 3 to 8 ft pool averages 5.5 ft. If the deep section is small, that overstates the volume: split the pool in two sections and add them. See the chart of common pool sizes.
